William Nimick Frew’s Georgian Revival mansion, Beechwood Hall, was designed by Alden & Harlow around 1913. The house was an immediate neighbor of the Richard Beatty Mellon estate along Fifth Avenue. Frew was a member of the board of directors of Mellon National Bank, Union Trust Company, and the Carnegie Institute. After the home was demolished, the land on which it stood became part of present-day Mellon Park. (Above, CMU.)

Daniel M. Clemson, owner of Highmont at Fifth and Shady Avenues, was president of the Carnegie Natural Gas Company. The entire operation of the company’s Pennsylvania and West Virginia gas fields was under his direction. He later ran a fleet of lake steamers for U.S. Steel.
